Things to Do

Staying at The Salt House puts you at the center of everything the Massachusetts coast has to offer. Here are our favorite things to do in the area, from our private beach to day trips across the Cape and Islands.

AT THE SALT HOUSE

Start your day with coffee on the patio, then walk out to your private white-sand beach on Buzzards Bay. The beach is perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or simply watching sailboats glide across the harbor. In the evening, settle into an Adirondack chair for one of the most spectacular sunset views on the South Coast. The cottage includes a curated library of beach reads, Tivoli speakers in every room, and a fully stocked chef’s kitchen for those nights when you’d rather cook than go out.

IN MARION

Marion Village is a short walk or drive from the cottage. Browse the Marion General Store, grab lunch at one of the local eateries, or take a scenic stroll along the harbor. Silvershell Beach and Planting Island Causeway are beautiful spots for a coastal walk. The town’s Tabor Academy campus gives the area a charming New England prep-school character, and the Sippican Historical Society museum offers a window into the town’s rich seafaring past.

CAPE COD DAY TRIPS

Cross the Bourne Bridge and you’re on Cape Cod. Falmouth is 35 minutes away and offers beautiful Main Street shopping, the Shining Sea Bikeway, and access to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Sandwich, the Cape’s oldest town, is 25 minutes away with the Sandwich Glass Museum, Heritage Museums & Gardens, and the iconic Sandwich Boardwalk. Drive further out to Chatham for upscale dining and seal-watching tours, or all the way to Provincetown for its legendary art galleries, whale watching excursions, and lively Commercial Street scene.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD DAY TRIP

Drive 35 minutes to Woods Hole and catch the Steamship Authority ferry (45 minutes to Vineyard Haven). Walk-on passengers don’t need reservations. On the Vineyard, visit the colorful gingerbread cottages and Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs, explore the galleries and boutiques of Edgartown, or make the trip to the Aquinnah Cliffs for sweeping views of the Atlantic. Rent bikes near the ferry terminal for the most authentic Vineyard experience.

NANTUCKET DAY TRIP

Drive 45 minutes to Hyannis and take the Hy-Line high-speed ferry (1 hour to Nantucket). Wander the cobblestone streets of Nantucket Town, visit the Whaling Museum, bike to Surfside Beach, or treat yourself to lunch at one of the island’s acclaimed restaurants. The high-speed ferry means you can comfortably do Nantucket as a full-day excursion and be back at The Salt House for sunset.
